Getting Started with LARP

What do I need to start LARPing?

In Aloria, the best place to start is with comfortable clothing! We highly recommend wearing baggy clothing that is easy to move in due to the full contact nature of our LARP. AS time goes on, you'll want to consider adopting things like:

  • Themed garb that matches your style, your clan's style, or the LARP's style in general. This garb should be comfortable, easy to move in, and not have an "ensnaring" or "entangling" elements, for safeties sake.
  • LARP gear such as boffer swords, shields, spears, etc. We don't limit weapon types, so be creative and train with your chosen kit! We highly recommend vendors such as Gorg the Blacksmith. Our weapons follow Belegarth and Dagorhir conventions and rules to permit cross gaming.
  • A fighter name! You ever met someone else with your name? Sure you have! You ever called out on a field fight and had 3 people turn to you, instead of the one person you were actually calling too? No? Oh. Well, that happens. We recommend choosing a name with one or two syllables, something that represents who you are and is appropriate for crowds of all ages.

With these basics you should be able to begin your LARPing adventure. As time goes on we all upgrade our kits to include new items. Some of us even pursue historically accurate armor! In Aloria, we're all about experimenting to find the right kit and "feel" for your inner hero.

Oh, and one last thing. LARPing in the style we do is very Dark Souls-esque, expect to "die" a lot as you learn and pick up new skills from weekly fighter practices. Check your ego at the door, as it has no place on the battle field.

It helps to see how other fighters move, spar, and work together. If you're wanting to learn more and expand your experience before or in between fighter practices, check out resources like Tussles.

Come Try Larp also is a great resource if you're looking to find other LARP's of a different nature to our own. Don't worry, we won't judge you for looking. We'll just miss you if you leave!

Garb can be made, purchased, gifted, whatever works! We support vegan alternatives to traditional armor and garb, but also support the traditional approach. It is highly recommended to get your garb checked before purchase, to ensure it doesn't pose any concerns for on-the-field fighting.

LARP Equipment

LARP equipment is thankfully hardy, and relatively affordable. We have a saying in Aloria:

"You don't truly start to fight, until you know your weapon and it knows you".

While we do have loaner equipment, we highly recommend you look into finding your own personal kit that matches your vibe. Gorg The Blacksmith sets the pace for high quality weapons in most LARPs.
